Job Summary / Organizational Impact

The Buyer/Planner is responsible for supporting customer service and other disciplines by procuring product in sufficient quantities to provide for superior customer service level while achieving targeted inventory turns objectives.   The Buyer/Planner is responsible to thoroughly understand the products they support, evaluate suppliers’ capabilities, negotiate and administer delivery/pricing as necessary to give the organization a competitive advantage. Also assists with the disposition of obsolete or overstocked inventory.

The organizational impact involves job requirements and issues which pertain to and bear directly on the operating performance of the business unit/profit center.

Responsibilities and essential functions

  1. Support the new product launch process by assisting with the transition from first article approval to production.  Provide accurate information concerning customer forecasted demand to AM and/or PM in Customer Service Department so as to meet customer requirements for new items and deplete stock levels on transitions. Prompt PM for a quick customer approval when required to meet forecasted demand.

  2. Review, analyze, and validate the planned orders for production items to determine purchase order volumes and delivery requirements.  Assess the validity of forecasted purchases, following up with the Sales team for investigation and information.

  3. Create and release purchase orders and purchase order changes.  Work with suppliers to improve lead time, minimum buying quantities, material handling requirements, and transportation methods.  Expedite materials to maintain necessary quantities and meet ship dates.Coordinate resolution and instruct disposition of quality issues, including instructions and paperwork to return parts or credit customers. Work directly with Quality Assurance, Buyer/Planners and Engineering to process item Material Reject Report (MRR) and Corrective Action Reports (CAR) so as to not interrupt or delay on time delivery of product to the customer. Timely follow through is required to insure customer satisfaction.

  4. Establish and maintain partnerships with suppliers as a key component to management of supplier compliance with purchase order due dates and fill rates.

  5. Review and assign action items for slow moving or obsolete inventory working with team members as required.

  6. Collect, assemble and enter OTW data.  Expedite HOT containers.
  7. Perform related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Organizational Skills. Must be organized and detail-oriented.  Must be able to multi-task.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills. Must be able to communicate well with others, internally and externally.  Negotiation may be required.
  • Computer proficiency; Microsoft Office, Navision
  • 1 to 2 years of College Training
  • 5 to 6 years related experience
  • CPIM Preferred

 

Physical Requirements

Climbing: Body agility is emphasized for ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps, and the like by using feet, legs, hands or arms.
Stooping:  Bending the body downward and forward at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
Kneeling:  Bending legs to come to a rest on the knee(s).
Balancing:  Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
Reaching:  Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Carrying:  Transporting an object, usually holding it in the hands or arms or on the shoulder. (Maximum weight of the object(s) 80 pounds)
Pushing:  Using the upper extremities to exert force upon an object so that the object moves away from the force. (Maximum weight of the object(s) 80 pounds)
Pulling:  Using the upper extremities to exert force upon an object so that the object moves toward the force. (Maximum weight of the object(s) 80 pounds)
Sitting:  Remaining in the normal seated position.
Standing:  Remaining on one’s feet in an upright position without moving about, particularly for sustained periods of time.
Walking:  Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks.
Lifting:  Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally. (Maximum weight of the object(s) 80 pounds)
Grasping:  Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and/or palm.
Repetitive Motions:  Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers for the purpose of picking up items, typing, operating ten-key or performing data entry.
Talking:  Expressing or exchanging instructions and ideas by means of the spoken word.
Hearing:  Ability to receive oral information and/or sounds through the ear.
Seeing:  Obtaining impressions through the eyes of the distance, size, shape, motion, color, or other characteristics of objects.  The major visual functions are:

  1. Acuity  (far and near)
  2. Depth perception  (perceiving distances)
  3. Color vision  (distinguishing between different colors)
  4. Field of vision  (seeing a wide range of objects at the same time).
