JOB TITLE:  Automation Engineer

Safety Sensitive Position: Yes


Responsible for design, implementation, and maintenance of new automated systems in Manufacturing and Assembly. Continuous improvement, troubleshooting and maintenance of existing automation, including error-proofing systems, leak test equipment and robots. Quoting costs for automation, error-proofing and fixtures needed for new items being quoted for manufacturing and/or assembly at RL Hudson. Also responsible for drafting work instructions and maintenance instructions for automated equipment.

The organizational impact involves project coordination, problem solving and decision making, which are of the highest level due to their impact on the marketing and delivery of RL Hudson’s products in the marketplace. Position greatly impacts customer satisfaction and profitability of R. L. Hudson.


1. Specifying new automation and error-proofing systems
o Review of part design, making suggestions for automation that could be implemented to improve the efficiency and/or quality of the process
o Prepare requests for quote for automation equipment needed
o Assist in preparing the quote to the customer for part specific automation
o Take part in project planning teams (APQP)

2. Implementation of new automation and error-proofing systems
o Design of automation systems, using outside resources as needed
o Design of end-of-arm tooling, conveyors, bowl feeders, etc, using outside resources as needed
o Purchase of robots, controls, components, etc. needed for automation
o Build out of robot/automation cell, new EAT, new peripherals, using outside resources as needed
o Validation of automation and error proofing equipment

3. Support for automation, error proofing, vision systems, and other related equipment
o Monitoring installed equipment
o Trouble shooting
o Adapting solutions for existing equipment to work with new part numbers
o Maintenance of automation and error proofing systems

4. Other Tasks as Directed by Manufacturing Manager, Director of Plastics Products or V.P. of Operations, including: Report QA automation metrics and testing status to project team, Identify, document and act on issues found during automated testing, Assist in deployment verification of applications or customer deliverables



Knowledge and Skill

• Proficient at integration and programming of PLC’s, Human Machine Interfaces (HMI’s), and 6-axis robotic systems
• Strong CAD skills and computer skills
• Ability to read and interpret drawings and electrical schematics
• Able to read and comprehend work instructions, part prints, control charts, maintenance logs, maintenance manuals and other operational literature.
• Interpersonal and communication skills.
• Organizational skills.


• College diploma in engineering or technical field preferred
• 5 to 10 years of related experience.
